Vocabulary Building - and looking at the Origin of words-

Part 1 では、長い単語をばらして、文字単位で、どのくらいの単語ができるかを見ました。
Part 2 では、言葉の語源を探って、単語力アップに挑戦します。

 English is as easy as 1、2、3. (何かが簡単だと "It's as easy as 1-2-3" と言いますが、英語単語も、語源が解れば、楽なのよ。)

まず「1」の意味のものを見てみましょう。 "uni" とか "mono" は「1」を表しています。
例えば、〇〇高校に対する意識を高めるため、学生さんは "uniform" で登校し、気持ちを統一する。
Unify, union, united, university, unicorn, unilateral, unicycle などなどあります。

また、沖縄の唯一の列車は、 "monorail" と言い、 "a single-rail railway system" だから。
Monotone, monochrome, monolith, monocle などもあります。

では、「2」の意味を持つ単語を探してみましょう。 "bi" や "du" は「２」を表しています。
一年に二回のイベントは、 "biannual" event ですし、biathlon, bilingual, bicycle もあります。
二人で歌えば、 "duet" ですし、dual, duo, duplicate もあります。

最後に、「３」を意味する "tri" で始まる単語を探してみましょう。オリンピックで、三つの種目を争う "triathlon" がありますし、triangle, tripod, triceps などもあります。

語源が少し知っていれば、見たことない単語でも、予測することもできます。例えば、if a "bicyle" has 2 wheels, and a unicyle has 1 wheel, then..."tricycle" は「三輪車」です。
